Video on Alternative Forms of Transportation

This video is part of a six city series on different ways to get from Point A to Point B. This 28 minute program filmed in San Francisco does a great job showing off the beauty and diversity of the SF Bay Area. The two minute trailer highlights all the other cities in the series. Highlights include:

  • Our first Toyota Prius
  • Zappy Scooters
  • Electric Mountain Bikes
  • The IT Personal Human Transporter
  • Naked Skaters in Golden Gate Park
  • Our GM EV1 that we drove for 3 years (in 2003 it was taken taken away and crushed, like those seen in the documentary Who Killed the Electric Car)
  • Critical Mass on Halloween
  • The Stanford Band in drag

A little background: Those who know us, know that we're a green car family. In October 2001 we were caught on film by some British filmmakers who were capturing the Casual Carpool phenomenon in Oakland. My sister and I were carpooling to SF when the film crew decided to film our ride and interview us about the benefits of carpooling. When we finished our interview we spotted a Zap electric scooter in their truck. I mentioned that my husband drives an electric car, the GM EV1. The director got so excited and wanted to talk to Mitch.

The next day the crew filmed us in old town Oakland with Mitch's old EV1, our Toyota Prius Hybrid and Mitch's brother Ryan's Honda Insight Hybrid.

On the third day, the director wanted to film at our house to capture "a green, two car garage". Mitch provided some great info on EV technology, and I discussed our Prius Hybrid. We finished up the shoot by being filmed driving across the Bay Bridge to San Francisco.

Looking back, it was a serendipitous meeting with this film crew that shares our same values on the environment and enthusiasm for technology. After all, they live halfway across the globe and knew about the casual carpool that I grew so accustomed to while commuting to SF every day. We hope that the producers of this video continue to showcase the ingenuity and passion for the environment and alternative forms of transportation that exist in all corners of the world. Who knows, maybe someday it will show in a theater near you.
